Current diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma relies on diagnostic imaging such as CT or MRI to detect tumor nodules followed by histopathologic analysis to determine tumor malignancy. The histopathologic report as well as gross features of tumors (tumor size and tumor number) are used to determine the treatment modalities.

However, diagnostic imaging cannot determine the tumor biology and genetic traits within hepatocellular carcinoma cells. Thus, vital information on characteristics of individual patients (genetic differences) has not been reflected in treatment decisions.
